The US House of Representatives’ Education and Labor Committee is currently considering the No Child Left Behind Act (summary of the Act here, complete text here), which would promote environmental literacy and education integrated into an environmental context (as shown in the video). Sounds like a good plan to get children outside more, but the No Child Left Behind Act itself is responsible for a lot of the education problems we now have in our country. I have a daughter who is at the top of the class. She comes home bored every day because they teach her things she already knows. Their solution: she gets a special day each week to use her mind. The rest of the week she sits in class while the other kids catch up.
