The return of spam-a-lot and the death of commentary

spam.gifReturned two nights ago from two glorious weeks in the French Alps (about which more later) sans internet access, and plunged into the cold waters of reality to find 2348 spam comments clogging the Natural Patriot.  The weight of this crap was so overwhelming that I couldn’t access the “comments in moderation” to get rid of them.  Long story short — in the process of laboriously slashing bogus comments, I managed accidentally to erase ALL comments posted after about 1 March.  So for those (all four or five of you) who have posted comments, which are now missing, I apologize — it certainly wasn’t intentional.  Not to mention that it makes this “discussion” look even more one-sided than it already is.

So that was yesterday.  Tonight  I log on and find 235 spam comments . . . in a single day!  If I can’t get this uder control, it may sink the whole enterprise.  Any suggestions about effective spamocidal plug-ins that work with Word Press are much appreciated . . .

Well, enough belly-aching about that stuff for now.  When I get back on my feet after the dust settles, I have a few observations to share about French civilization, the comparative horror of most of the American landscape as viewed from our roadways (those being the only place from which most Americans see the landscape), and what we might learn about sustainable harmonious living from looking around at the rest of the world. I also had time on vacation, uncharacteristically, to read a few books of interest to the general cause of Natural Patriotism.  So ya’ll come back now, y’hear?

You should turn on “word verification,” where the commenter has to type in a word (and it’s written so that a machine can’t recognize it). My experience is that it basically eliminates all spam.

Glad you had a good vacation! Take care!

Don’t give up the cause. I finally figured out how to get the RSS feed thing going! Linda

Thanks Andy and Linda. I have seen the word verification thing and need to find out where to get a download. Will do . .

Cool! I have installed a new FREE spamocidal plug-in from reCAPTCHA
that should solve these problems. It requires a human commenter to answer two questions (reminiscent of the bridgekeeper at the Gorge of Eternal Peril — only it’s just two), as you can see below. I’ve been meaning to do this for some time. Sometimes you need a kick in the rear end . . .
